Risk Adjusted Counseling and Referral Services

This 2-day course provides support for the implementation of HIV testing services in non-clinical settings by giving participants multiple opportunities to practice the CDC’s Reduced Counseling Approach to testing.  During the course, participants will be introduced to the new Intake and Testing Form, which includes PrEP screening.  They will learn how it fits into an HIV testing algorithm that depicts escalating risk and the corresponding counseling approaches.  Participants will also become familiar with a new risk reduction counseling tool.  The class concludes with an emphasis on self-care for the counselor.

This course will no longer train testing technologies or quality assurance.

The trainer was excellent and these comments do not reflect her ability to teach material, only reflect comments on the course content. The goals/intention of the course were murky. The course did not intend to teach testing, did not intend to teach us to use the CDPHE form (since agencies can design their own), did not teach RedCap, and did not teach sex positivity, open ended questions, or motivational interviewing. I did not leave understanding the purpose of the course. I have attended CTRS courses and feel prepared to perform testing and all the above skills adequately. However, I failed to understand what RACR added. Additionally, some folks did not have this background. I do not give this review with any animosity, I am only concerned that people will leave unprepared.

Great course. Very helpful for a new tester. Would love a similar course pertaining to HCV so I can feel as confident administering testing across the board.
